Hanuman Quotes in Sanskrit With Meaning: Bio, WhatsApp Status and Shlokas
Share
Hanuman is the one people call on when something has to get done: strength that serves, speed with a purpose, a mind that never gives up. So here are the Hanuman shlokas and verses people use for an Instagram bio, a WhatsApp status or a tattoo — each one complete, never half a verse, with its Hindi and English meaning and its true source.
Most come from Valmiki's Sanskrit Ramayana and the Ramraksha Stotra. The much-loved verses of the Hanuman Chalisa and the Ramcharitmanas of Tulsidas are in Awadhi, not Sanskrit, and we've marked them that way. Near the end we list famous "Hanuman quotes" whose source is usually given wrongly.
Hanuman Sanskrit shlokas with meaning
Each card is the whole verse: the original words, how to read them, and the meaning in English and Hindi. The Ramayana verses are from the critical edition of Valmiki's Ramayana (Oriental Institute, Baroda), with references as Kanda · sarga.verse. The Ramraksha Stotra is a later Sanskrit hymn to Rama; the Hanuman Chalisa and Ramcharitmanas verses are Tulsidas's Awadhi. The most loved come first.

Valmiki doesn't make Hanuman's search easy. After combing Lanka and not finding Sita, he despairs: if he goes back and says "I did not see her", he fears Rama, Lakshmana and the whole army will lose the will to live (Sundara Kanda 5.11.23). For a while he thinks of never going home at all. Then he steadies himself with the verse above, bows to Rama and Sita, and goes to search the one grove he hasn't tried — the Ashoka grove, where he finds her. That is the Hanuman of the Ramayana: not a hero who never doubts, but one who doesn't stop.

Questions people ask
What is the most famous Sanskrit shloka on Hanuman?
“मनोजवं मारुततुल्यवेगं जितेन्द्रियं बुद्धिमतां वरिष्ठम्…” — swift as the mind, fast as the wind. It is verse 33 of the Ramraksha Stotra, not Valmiki's Ramayana. From the Ramayana itself, Hanuman's own line “दासोऽहं कोसलेन्द्रस्य” (I am the servant of the king of Kosala, Sundara Kanda 5.41.7) is the shortest and strongest.
Is the Hanuman Chalisa in Sanskrit?
No. Tulsidas wrote it in Awadhi, an old form of Hindi, in the 16th century. It sounds close to Sanskrit because it borrows many Sanskrit words, but the grammar is Awadhi.
What does “अनिर्वेदः श्रियो मूलम्” mean?
Not losing heart is the root of success. Hanuman says it to himself in Lanka when he still hasn't found Sita (Sundara Kanda 5.10.10) — a good line for anyone in the middle of something hard.
Which Hanuman quote is good for a tattoo?
Short lines suit a tattoo: “दासोऽहं कोसलेन्द्रस्य”, “अनिर्वेदः श्रियो मूलम्”, or “रामदूतं च मां विद्धि” (know me as Rama's messenger). Have the Devanagari checked by someone who reads Sanskrit before it goes on skin.
Where do these meanings come from?
The Sanskrit is from the critical edition of Valmiki's Ramayana (Oriental Institute, Baroda) and the traditional text of the Ramraksha Stotra. The Awadhi lines are from the Hanuman Chalisa and the Gita Press text of the Ramcharitmanas. The English and Hindi renderings are our own.
