Guru Nanak Quotes in Gurmukhi With Meaning: Bio, WhatsApp Status and Gurbani Lines

Guru Nanak Dev Ji sang his teaching rather than writing it as rules — and the hymns he sang are kept in the Guru Granth Sahib, written in the Gurmukhi script. His language mixes Punjabi with Hindi, Braj and other tongues of North India; it is not Sanskrit. Here are the lines of his bani people hold closest for an Instagram bio, a WhatsApp status or a tattoo — each a complete verse in Gurmukhi, never cut in half, with a reading in Devanagari and Roman letters and its meaning in Hindi and English.

Every card names its source: the bani and the Ang (page) of the Guru Granth Sahib, as numbered in the standard 1,430-page edition. Some lines often shared as Guru Nanak's are by other Gurus or bhagats, or come from later tradition; we've marked those near the end.

Guru Nanak quotes in Gurmukhi with meaning

We begin, as the Guru Granth Sahib does, with the Mool Mantar. The Gurmukhi below is from BaniDB, the open Gurbani database behind SikhiToTheMax, checked line by line against its Ang numbers; the Devanagari and Roman readings follow the same source. The English and Hindi are our own plain renderings — Gurbani opens up most fully with a Giani's explanation, and no translation is final.

“One Creator, the One who is all. Truth is the Name. The Maker, the Being. Without fear, without hatred. Timeless in form, never born, self-existent. Known by the Guru's grace.”

“Make contentment your earrings, modesty your begging bowl and bag, and meditation the ash on your body. Let the thought of death be your patched coat, a pure body your way, and faith your staff. Let all humanity be your order — conquer your mind and you conquer the world. I bow to him, I bow: the first, the pure, without beginning, beyond harm, the same in every age.”

“So many stubborn minds, so many readings of the Vedas; so many bonds on the soul — the one who faces the Guru finds the door to freedom. Truth is higher than everything; higher still is truthful living.”

“One without understanding sings hymns; the hungry mullah turns his home into a mosque; an idler has his ears pierced to pass for a yogi; another becomes a fakir and gives up his standing. One who calls himself guru or pir and goes out begging — never bow at his feet. One who earns by honest work and gives some of it away with his own hand — Nanak, he knows the way.”

“From woman we are born, in woman we are formed; to woman we are engaged and married. Woman becomes our friend; through woman the generations go on. When a woman dies, another is sought; through woman we are bound to the world. So why call her lowly, from whom kings are born? From woman comes woman; without woman there is no one. Nanak, only the One True Lord is beyond woman. The mouth that always praises him is blessed and beautiful — Nanak, those faces shine in the True Court.”

“The simmal tree is straight as an arrow, very tall and very thick — yet those who come to it in hope go away disappointed: its fruit is tasteless, its flowers bitter, its leaves of no use. Sweetness and humility, Nanak, are the essence of every virtue and goodness. Everyone bows to himself; no one bows to another. Put them on the scales and weigh them: the one who bows is heavier. The sinner bows twice as low, like the deer-hunter — but what use is bowing the head when the heart is impure?”

“Thinking cannot reach him, though you think a hundred thousand times. Silence cannot still the mind, though you sit lost in unbroken focus. The hunger of the hungry is not satisfied, though they gather up whole worlds. You may have a hundred thousand clevernesses — not one goes with you. So how do we become truthful, and how does the wall of falsehood come down? By walking in his Hukam, his will, Nanak — written within us.”

A note on the name "Nanak" inside a verse. Every Guru whose bani is in the Guru Granth Sahib signs it as "Nanak" — so a line that says "Nanak" may be by Guru Angad, Guru Amar Das, Guru Ram Das, Guru Arjan or Guru Tegh Bahadur. The heading Mahalla 1 marks Guru Nanak's own bani. Even the closing salok of Japji above appears again, almost word for word, on Ang 146 as a salok of Guru Angad Dev Ji.

Famous "Guru Nanak quotes" that aren't his own bani

"From one light the whole world was made — so who is good and who is bad?" It is in the Guru Granth Sahib, and deeply loved — but it is by Bhagat Kabir, not Guru Nanak.
Bhagat Kabir · Guru Granth Sahib, Ang 1349
"One who frightens no one and fears no one — call him wise." A salok signed "Nanak", but written by the ninth Guru, Guru Tegh Bahadur.
Guru Tegh Bahadur · Guru Granth Sahib, Ang 1427
"Nanak, with the Name may our spirits rise; by your will, may all be well." These are the closing words of the Ardas, the Sikh community prayer. They are much loved, but they are not in the Guru Granth Sahib.
The Ardas · not the Guru Granth Sahib
"Work honestly, remember the Name, share what you have" is a later summary of Guru Nanak's teaching, not a line of his bani. The idea is his — see “ਘਾਲਿ ਖਾਇ ਕਿਛੁ ਹਥਹੁ ਦੇਇ” above (Ang 1245).
Later summary · the idea is Ang 1245
"There is no Hindu, there is no Musalman" — the janamsakhis, the later life-stories of Guru Nanak, say he spoke these words after his three days in the Vein (Bein) river. They are not a line in the Guru Granth Sahib.
Janamsakhi tradition · not the Guru Granth Sahib
"Nanak, whoever walks humbly…" is a popular saying we could not find in the Guru Granth Sahib. Guru Nanak's own line on humility is “ਮਿਠਤੁ ਨੀਵੀ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਗੁਣ ਚੰਗਿਆਈਆ ਤਤੁ” — sweetness and humility are the essence of all virtue (Ang 470, above).

Questions people ask

What is Guru Nanak Dev Ji's most famous line?

The Mool Mantar, “ੴ ਸਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਰਤਾ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਨਿਰਵੈਰੁ…” — the first words of the Guru Granth Sahib (Ang 1). After it, many people know “ਮਨਿ ਜੀਤੈ ਜਗੁ ਜੀਤੁ”, conquer the mind and you conquer the world (Japji Sahib, pauri 28).

What does "nirbhau nirvair" mean?

Without fear, without hatred. Both words describe the Creator in the Mool Mantar — and for a Sikh they are also a way to live: to fear no one and to hate no one.

What does "sachahu orai sabh ko upar sach aachaar" mean?

Truth is higher than everything, but higher still is truthful living. It's from Sri Raag on Ang 62 of the Guru Granth Sahib.

Is Gurbani written in Sanskrit or Punjabi?

Neither exactly. It is written in Gurmukhi script, in a language that mixes old Punjabi with Hindi, Braj, Persian and other tongues of the Guru's time — sometimes called Sant Bhasha. It is not Sanskrit.

What is an Ang?

Ang means limb — Sikhs say Ang rather than "page" for the Guru Granth Sahib. Every standard copy has the same 1,430 Angs, so a line can be found by its Ang anywhere.

Where do these meanings come from?

The Gurmukhi and its Devanagari and Roman readings are from BaniDB (SikhiToTheMax). The English and Hindi renderings are our own, kept close to the words; for deeper meaning, a Giani or a full steek is the place to go.
